Half & Half

Whole Milk

Creamy Hot Cocoa

What’s better than a snow day? A snow day with homemade hot cocoa!

Ingredients

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup Horizon Organic Half & Half
3 cups Horizon Organic Milk, 2% or Whole
1 tsp vanilla extract
Whipped cream or mini marshmallows, for serving

Directions

Whisk together sugar, cocoa and salt. Whisk in half & half and stir over low heat until smooth and sugar has dissolved. Stir in milk and continue to heat until mixture just comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. 

 

Variations:

Double Chocolate – Stir in 1/4 cup semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips until melted. Top with whipped cream and mini chocolate chips. 

Peppermint – Add 1 tsp peppermint extract with the vanilla extract. Top with whipped cream and peppermint candies

Peanut Butter – Whisk in 2 Tbsp smooth peanut butter. Top with whipped cream and salted peanuts.

Mocha – Add 2 tsp instant espresso powder with the sugar, cocoa and salt. Top with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. 

Mexican Hot Chocolate – Add 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/8 tsp cayenne powder. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Lowfat – Omit half & half and use 4 cups skim milk, 1/3 cup sugar and 1 1/2 tsp vanilla.
